Debate: Woolrich Wollen Mills vs. Patagonia

Daiki came real strong with surf style for the S/S 2010 Woolrich Woolen Mills collection and while I am beyond down with it all, I was extremely surprised to see him totally rip off the iconic Patagonia Snap-T pullover with his Ricon pullover.  Whether or not WWM's lack of branding and fit is worth a whopping 134 dollar premium is up for debate.  Regardless, the jacket in question has one of my favorite silhouettes of all time and is a great piece of warm weather outerwear perfect for nights on the beach if you are lucky enough to be involved in such activities.  For the first time ever I am inclined to go against arguably my favorite brand based on the absurd price mark up and what appears to be unabashed sniping.  Reverence or penance?

  1. Good catch, though brands update classics all the time, maybe it's more of an homage than a rip off? I don't think the original design is too iconic/original to consider it a rip off.

Personally, I like the WWM update, I'm sure the cut is trimmer and decidedly more sweatshirt, less polar fleece. Can't stand fleece and I wouldn't want to layer with it. Though I probably wouldn't part with $230 for it.

  2. Patagonia's snap-t is totally iconic. Love it or hate, there is nothing else like it - other than when LL Bean did a take off on it a few years ago. I have two snap-t pullovers - one over 12 years old and one I am yet to wear. Forget it WWM.

  3. I have a snap-t pullover by Woolrich (not WWM) from the mid nineties... looks like they just updated it with this one. Mine doesn't have a breast pocket.

  4. it's patagonia for me. i owned some shorts and a few flannels before the "let my people go surfing" book came out and since then the variety of products has spread. i dont have the snap-t pullover (although i picked it up as a gift for a friend last year) but i have to say that i honestly find it difficult to purchase any other brand when it comes to products that are this similar to what patagonia offers.

  5. Patagonia if not for the tradition and history then for the funky colors. Teal and purple? Why not!

  6. Suzuki is really on his game. However, Patagonia stuff is classic, tried and true. Buy that pullover once, and their Ironclad Guarantee covers it for life. Not to mention, they use organic and recycled materials and give back to environmental causes.

  7. WWM of course. The reason: It's not made of fleece. I can't stand fleece unless I am actually doing some outdoor activities in the wilderness. Fleece in urban settings is a no-no.

  8. I'm with you on this LAS... I'm a little disappointed to see WWM pretty much make a Patagonia Snap-T, just in a different material. Maybe it's just b/c Patagonia has been in my closet longer than the WWM stuff I've bought.

  9. Patagonia is one of those brands that always wins. At least in my world.
