Since I recommend Vans Authentics like my life somehow depends on it, I figured I'd share with you guys how I keep my joints smelling fresh. As you probably already know wearing canvas sneaks sockless in sweltering weather can lead to some funky-ass kicks, especially if you have some seriously sweaty dogs, so here is my method to keeping things fresh to death:
1. Apply a layer of baby powder on the insoles of your Authentics proportional to how bad your shoes actually smell.
2. Make sure everything is evenly distributed and knock out the remaining powder.
3. Place your "dusted" Authentics outdoors to breath for a while (I do this for a day max).
4. Knock your shoes together to make sure that every last bit of rogue powder is out.
5. Place you Authentics in the freezer for a couple of hours.
6. Put on your super duper fresh kicks and go do some damage.
It's that simple folks and the results are the real deal.

...or wash your feet on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteAnon- Washing your feet on a daily basis has nothing to do with wearing shoes sockless and sweating. Please.
ReplyDeleteI wear loafer socks instead of going sockless. In my opinion, more comfortable and helps prevent da funk.
ReplyDeleteL.A.S.,
ReplyDeleteAny tips on doing the same for boat shoes? My Sperrys often reek unless I wear loafer socks.
SNK- There's something about loafer socks I just can't get down with.
ReplyDeletePopery- I guess you could try the same process or just throw 'em in the freezer, which does wonders on its own.
Now I know what I'm doing with my mini fridge this summer after graduation. Dedicated Authentic cooler!
ReplyDeleteyou came up with that stay fresh formula on your own son? i hope you're getting paid by Vans b/c you are killing it with the post!
ReplyDeleteAnon- This is basically a combination of a few methods, some my own, some from others. Lots of research goes into this kinda stuff obviously haha.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wish I was getting paid by Vans so I could stop spending so much money on sneakers.
Dope post I started with the baby powder, then moved to backing soda. I store my authentic on the balcony though. My moms told me corn starch back in the day, but I still havent tried that one.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for this post, shoe funk is a major issue for me.
ReplyDeletethe freezer trick: now that's new!
Shiiiiiiiiiiit. I throw my joints away after every wear. If I can't lick the sole then I don't roll. Ya heard!
ReplyDeleteI DO, in fact, rock the vans mini socks. They're an absolute blessing till you take your shoes off in front of people and show them you're sporting ballet slippers. Whatever, my dogs don't stink though. Who's the big winner? The kid with the weird socks and fresh feet is the big winner!!!!
The freezer trick is also good for sorting raw denim out if you don't want to wash them but they're starting to smell a bit.
ReplyDeleteLOI- No gonna lie, after I saw it work on my demins I tried it out on my kicks.
ReplyDeleteWhen going sockless in summer (boat shoes, Sperry Stripers, Stan Smiths) I powder my feet before putting on the shoes in the morning. Takes an extra minute or so and is a little messy, but it seems to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestion, but I think my fiance wouldn't be too happy to find my funky kicks in the freezer, pressed up against the Eggo waffles.
ReplyDeleteAre you spending all your cash on clothes and that's why your freezer has no food in it? Ice cubes and big gulps of air are no real diet.
ReplyDeleteDAM- I know, I know...I need to go grocery shopping.
ReplyDeleteJust buy a 3 pack of odor eaters. When one gets destroyed throw another in. A 3 pack for 10 bucks will get you through the summer and you won't have to go through all of the other crap.
ReplyDeletePatrick- Baby powder is like $1 so my crap is cheaper than your crap. Bam.
ReplyDeleteMy wife would kick my ass if I put my stinky shoes in her freezer. Not that there's any room for a pair of 13s anyway.
ReplyDeleteI just wash my Vans and other canvas sneakers. Throw them in the machine and let them dry. Good as new!
ReplyDeleteATG - Haha, I wear those loafer socks as well..
When I was picking up my APCs at Context, Ryan pretty much negated the freezer idea. He claims the cold just makes the bacteria dormant versus killing them - postponing the stink versus removing it.
ReplyDeleteIf he's correct I assume the same goes for shoes.
how about washing them? is that good enough doesnt the color fade
ReplyDeletePut your funky kicks in a ziplock bag before putting them in the freezer - ice cream should never be assaulted with that smell. ;)
ReplyDeletewalk into the ocean. then wipe them down with the inside of a banan peel.
ReplyDeleteLawrence,
ReplyDeleteMay I call you that? Too late.
Spot on with the Gold Bond. Aside from water and dope beats, there is nothing more vital to my daily existence. However, I regret to inform you that freezing does very little to kill bacteria, especially the little dudes runnin' around in your all whites. That being said, I'll cosign throwing your loafers in the freezer for a quarter hour before you rage around town (or sit at home reading #rapwear).
Bonus Tip II: Army Rangers have been rocking deodorant for, well I don't know how long but probably a long while, to help with stank boots. Good enough for Rangers, good enough for menswear blo...I mean journalists.

Now to knock out that mud butt...
ReplyDeleteI wore a few pair of Converse sneakers throughout college. Many students wore them. I never wore them with socks; as well as the same way as other students wore them at the time. I never had a smelly issues.
