The Point Of No Return: Sweatshorts

The sweats debate/trend/apocalypse continues with this new release courtesy of J. Crew.  Apparently they've been given the "leaner silhouette" treatment and fall under "the perfect lounge-about shorts" category.  While I personally would wear sweatpants out of the house, I am not quite sold on these.  They definitely could make cool lounge gear like previously stated, but the jury is still out on how they would fair in the public domain.  More or less the same argument made for or against the cut off sweatshirt applies here, though I think we could all agree this is a tad more touch and go.  Regardless of all that, this release comes as no surprise, at least to me.  With everything getting slimmed up these days it was only a matter of time before gym rats got their steeze hooked up too.  It's a shame I don't live in Japan because for 38 bucks I'd have bottoms for everyday of the week - real talk.

  1. I'd rather robocop one solid pair of sweatpants and just pull them up and peg 'em if I wanted them shorter.

  3. i've had a pair of these from steve & barry's for a couple years, like to wear them with my baseball tees but it's much easier to get away with something like this while at college.
not so sure about anyone wearing them in the real world
i do agree with jon though, i would rather pull up some normal sweatpants.

  4. I used to have a couple pairs of sweatshorts that were great for lounging, but I only wore them outside if I was hungover and grabbing breakfast.

On another note, where are those $38 bottoms in Japan? I was in Tokyo last summer and all I learned was that everything there is expensive as hell. Although I must admit I had no clue where to look.

  5. Gogglesgagne- I was just joking that this whole sweatpants explosion seems to have started in Japan and If I lived over there I could look sweet by wearing these J. Crew joints everyday.

  7. I have the version they made a couple years ago in navy. I wear them when hanging around the apartment, or when playing outdoor sports. That's outdoor sports, fellas. Soccer, softball, basketball, etc.

  10. I like these. I like them a lot. I would date a boy even if he wore these.

  11. Speaking as an adult woman, if I saw a grown man wearing these for something besides yard work, sports, a quick trip to Home Depot for last minute supplies, I'd be disappointed.

  12. Off the top sweat shorts are comfortable as f--k and if you doubt me, try them out. Go to Wal-Mart, cop some $8 Hanes sweatpants, cut them to the desired length and rock them. They are sooooo sooooft. With that said, the fact that you can do what I just said and achieve the look is a major problem with these shorts. Everyone here has to agree that in wearing shorts you are deciding to be casual for the day. In no way shape or form can shorts be anything more than just plan old casual. If you wear shorts to work you either are an athlete of some sort or work for some parcel service. So there is nothing wrong with the decidedly casual look of these shorts in my opinion. I think something like the ensemble could easily be worn with some canvas shoes (boat shoe or sneaker... doesn't really matter) to a barbeque or crab boil and you would look fresher than the douche with the seersucker shorts, polo shirt, and wayfarers with croakies. You have to own the look though.

  15. Couple of people have mentioned this, but jcrew has been doing these for a while. Vince and kzo, too. I admit I've worn them out for a shopping trip or afternoon at the park and they are really, really comfortable. Good tshirt, good sneakers and it looks all right.

They are ok to kick around in but I could never take a man seriously if he tried to dress them up. FAIL.
