Debate: The Gingham Sportcoat
J. Crew is calls it a "sharp take on a summer staple". I call it bold as hell especially considering the novelty factor, but figuring in the under $200 price tag I can actually see people buying this thing. Is a gingham sportcoat even really a surprise at this point? Why discriminate when various other patterns and types of cotton have already been elevated to sportcoat status? Now that I think about it this would actually look quite dapper when paired with a crispy white shirt and some chinos. So who's on board and who's gulping down some haterade?

I just got this the other day in an XS, fits literally like a glove. Black knit tie and white shirt is sooo gonna be worn with this.

ReplyDeleteyea i'd def rock this, why not. i love gingham, and i love well tailored sportcoats. sounds like a dope ass combo to me haha. rock this w/some white jeans, some new weejuns (no socks), and a sky blue shirt and you have an instant classic on your hands.

Now, J. Crew has shocked me back to reality and I am as pessimistic as ever about the clothing choices of young men.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love it. I am scrounging up the money for one as we speak. This is precisely what I need in a summer sportcoat- a pattern that's striking without being too outrageous.

The unbuttoned neck.
The black shirt.
The one size too small jacket.
The upturned jacket cuffs.

ReplyDeleteI don't like this blazer too much but the one that Junya Watanabe has done for this season in a bright blue gingham is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSo I guess J.Crew are just filtering down what some 'higher fashion' brands have already being doing for a while (Junya's easily been doing this for a few years).
This is J. Crew's rip off of Rugby's gingham blazer. I think it looks sharp, but it's too bold for me to wear on one of the few occasions that I do sport a jacket.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of J.Crew. HUGE! I personally would not wear this, and I love gingham. I'm just personally not bold enough in my sartorial choices...& I know my wife would hate it. That's not to say though, that it's not a cool jacket, and wouldn't look cool on a young dude who wishes to rock it. Good for you guys!

ReplyDeleteNot my style. But it reminds me of a sportcoat I saw at this weekend's Players Championship. Henrik Stenson presented the trophy wearing a Hugo Boss tattersall blazer with red elbow patches.

ReplyDeleteBut that sportcoat is a big time "WIN"... it's pretty ballsy, but I think anyone could pull it off if everything else worn is kept simple.
Anon @ 2.46am: They have em in store and online as well. I know the Small would have required some surgery but the XS was money.

ReplyDeleteThe gingham sportscoat isn't anything new, I picked up a PRL one a few years ago now. Absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteWorking buttonholes are never a good idea in an OTR jacket because if you have to shorten the sleeves (which I always do) yer fucked.

My grandfather has had a navy gingham sport coat for years that he wears with light stone chino's or grey summer weigh slacks. Orvis has been selling them for years and if worn correctly could be pretty fly on a young guy.
