Malik Shabazz

"Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery."  Happy 85th birthday to a man who was nothing short of influential, controversial and one hell of a snappy dresser.

  1. I've been trying to determine just what it takes to be able to pull off those wonderful glasses Malcom always wore. I think, looking at all the pictures of him, it comes down to having a strong jaw. The weight of the jawline allows you to pull off the heavy brows of the glasses.

  2. Just goes to show that if you wait long enough, a racist criminal can become a sartorial idol.

  4. He looks comfortable in his clothes, confident in his being. Maybe we should consider great style, like courage, to be a morally ambiguous virtue.

  5. It also goes to show, anon@2:06, that any time a black man is intelligent, articulate, well dressed, and a critic of the dominant paradigm, those who are ignorant will seek to marginalize them.

  6. According to the UN, while the % is smaller, the absolute number of slaves in the world today is higher than ever.

Most slaves are from Africa and are held in Muslim countries.

    The truth hurts sometimes.

  7. A well-dressed criminal, though his intentions were laudable.

    On the contrary!

Any time a man--be he black or white--is intelligent, articulate, and well dressed, we are inclined to embrace him.
