Short Fuse

Everyone I've ever talked to has complained about how J. Crew's shirts fit.  I have no idea if they remedied this issue for their S/S 2010 shirting arrivals, but that's a totally different story.  One thing I do love about J. Crew (because Sart Inc aint about the hate) is their shorts.  Whether you want to get all WASP-ed out or keep it clean and quiet J. Crew probably has about 5 pairs that fit the bill.  The great thing about the cut of a short is that as long as the waist and length are good you are golden.  So regardless of how you feel about how J. Crew fits your upstairs, I recommend picking up some bottoms.

The new arrivals on the website look on point as usual with a bunch of gentlemanly staples and some cool newer stuff.  Everything from the sun-faded joints to the oxford cloth (!) and madras look perfect from what I've seen thus far and the price point of $59.50-$62.50 plays in my book for sure.  Oh yeah, and as per usual the styling choices of J. Crew are some of the best in the business.

  1. I'm diggin' the oxford cloth shorts, but what happens when you want to wear an oxford cloth shirt? Consider your mind blown.

PS-I guess you could wear different shorts but that's not the point.

  2. I curious about exactly how the shirts don't fit well to see if everyone's experience is the same as mine. For me it's perfect except that it bulges at either side at the hip when tucked in.

  3. Adam- The shirts fit me pretty terribly. I have the same problem when I tuck the shirts in aka no go. There is just too much fabric and even though they are "slimmed-down" they need to do a much better job. I realize they need to cast a wide net with their cut, but they can easily lose an inch or two of fabric.

  5. I'm not sure what all the uproar is about their shirt cuts. I'm one of the skinnier people on earth and I think they're fine. Are people looking for spandex-inspired oxfords? My only issue are their shirt collars; I find that they don't sit quite right.

Did that thing about denim fits ever go up? I never came across it anywhere.

  6. Nicholas- The mediums just don't do it for me and the small is, well, too small. Maybe I started this post off with an unverified absolute. Haha.

The Denim project is coming out soon. Swearsies.

  7. I'm on the larger side - big shoulders, big belly, and I like the J.Crew shirts in...large. The sleeves are a bit long, but they fit well everywhere else. GAP & Banana's shirts are cut WAY bigger. For a guy like me (who enjoys shoulder presses and a six-pack of beer - at the same time), J.Crew cuts their shirts (and jeans) perfectly!

  8. I do like the fit of their jeans. The quality of the denim itself is laughable but the "vintage slim fit" is a great cut for a thin, but non-hipster guy. I ended up getting a selvedge pair for about $40 over the holiday. I would have never paid the $150 they were originally asking though. I guess at the end of the day there's no reason to have a top quality denim if they look like crap on you.

  9. I like the vintage oxfords they used to sell (the heavier weight ones) in medium. My only complaint is the neck is too small for me but everything else fits fine (which for me is rare). Wish they'd give the neck a half inch and bring the heavier weight back.

  10. I got a pair of their chino shorts in nantucket red last summer and they see a lot of wear.

  11. I'm 6'6" and pretty damn skinny so the Large Tall fits me just about perfectly. My only problem with their shirts is that they don't make all of them in tall sizes. Come on J Crew, show the tall freaks some more love!

  12. What's up with all of the long shorts? 9 and 11 inches on most of them. Obviously, I understand that you can get shorts hemmed (which I do), but it seems kind of weird that that's the look they're promoting.

  13. Trip- How much man-calf you tryna show brother?

  14. I picked up the lightweight chino club short in light blue last saturday. I'm a hard sell on shorts, especially in January, but these fit so well I had to indulge. As for the shirts, I'm in the same boat as you LAS. The small is too small and the medium too, well, medium.

  15. I'm with trip, the shorts are way too long for my tastes. But I often cuff my shorts up anyway, that's the beauty about shorts, you only really need to get the waist right.

  16. Trip knows what's up. In Clemson if you can't see the bottoms of your pockets sticking out of your shorts then they're probably shants instead. I think J.Crew makes a 5" that kicks ass. Forget man-calf, it's about man-thigh.

  17. I definitely have to size down to get a decent fit but overall they make a decent shirt. Those shorts are a tad bit long.

  18. I really like J.Crew's 'Tailored Fit' shirts - they fit me well. As for the shorts - I 100% agree that they are the best out there. The rise is just right. As for the length, I'm not a fan of man-pris. I prefer a 6-7" inseam...

  19. Well, I will caveat my comment with the fact that I am 5'6", so 11" shorts would come well below my knees. But in spite of not ever being in a fraternity, I typically go with a 6" inseam. Maybe shorter shorts are just a Southern thing, but then again it's so hot down here in August, it's all about minimalism.

  20. Frat boy here - I like the 9" shorts. They hit just above the knee. That's all anybody ever needs to see.

  21. Like Trip I am also 5'6 and Southern. I hate the longer, slimmer shorts that they have, but I swear by their 6" shorts. I've had several people comment on how short my shorts are, but I refuse to wear a longer inseam.
