TOMMY S/S 2011

GQ has the scoop on the newest line out of the Hilfiger camp - TOMMY.  While the Tailored collection seems to have Polo Ralph Lauren squarely in its sights, TOMMY is going after the Rugger's and Rugby's of the world by appealing to the ever growing neo-prep set.  The difference here is timing (late to the party) and price (we're talking sub-Lands End Canvas with "knits starting at $39, sweaters at $49, and outerwear at $69").  I'm not sure how I feel about all this.  On one hand, the aping is blatantly obvious, but, then again, Hilfiger is a true originator - the exact same catch 22 that has defined this stage of his company's evolution/rebranding initiative.  Not to mention, the jury is still out on what kind of quality we can expect with prices this low.  For those interested, TOMMY will be available as select locations across the US and Canada much like how the Tailored Collection can only be grabbed at the NYC flagship.  A final thought, from the few pictures and looks available, I can appreciate the apparent boldness of the clothes themselves.  To differentiate yourself in a menswear world that becomes more uniform by the day you gotta go big or go home.

  1. I don't understand why they would make such an inexpensive line exclusive to certain locations. I might check this out if there was an online store.

  2. I feel like there's nothing particularly interesting in this whole set. Price could be the only saving grace to a collection of super basic basics.

theyre really going to have to have a solid argument as to why their jean jacket is better than a levi's one, or why their pants are better than rugby's.

  4. The line is expanding to more stores and online in the spring. I went to the Tommy store this weekend on Bleeker street. Nice colors, good prices, but none of the pieces really grabbed me as must haves. The link below is Valet's two cents on the matter.

  5. I feel at those prices, the quality must be pretty iffy at best... and isn't quality craftsmenship the real driving force behind this clothing movement? We buy Alden shoes not only because they look great, but becuase they are made beautifully and will last you a lifetime. Seems to me that Tommy is jumpnig on a bandwagon way too late and cutting all the corners trying to catch up. Names like alex carlton and ernesto ramirez give a new level of credibility to the brands that they work with even if those prices are low too.

  6. I just saw the lookbook earlier today, and it was rather boring - nothing that piqued my interest, save for that camo blazer the black dude's wearing. What I'm really interested in is their fall collection:

    I need those orange pants.

  7. this trend is dead. Go for similar cuts in solids or textures. leave stripes OUT all together for a while and keep patterns to accessories.

Florals are great, women can get creative with that, men are best to stay to neutrals (grey, white, black, earthly or highly muted) items if they want to attempt this daring trend.
