Getting double monks in the US is hard. Getting Crockett & Jones double monks in the US is even harder. Getting Crockett & Jones brown suede double monks in the US was downright impossible. But holdup, Barney's has just stepped in to make impossible nothing (I hope Adidas doesn't sue me like they sued Thom). For one easy payment of $595 you can now get, quite possibly, the most killer double monks on the market. This is a big coup for investment bankers and trust funders who also happen to read style blogs. It's real nice to see someone finally sticking their neck out for that burgeoning, yet highly neglected demographic. Rejoice! For anyone seriously considering this purchase (and there's got to be at least one of you out there, right?) the Lowndes comes on C&J's 348 last and has a standard width.

Allen Edmonds really needs to re-release the Mora in all varieties.
ReplyDeleteLust is the perfect word. I've been looking for a good pair of double monks for a while. These are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, love the blog-- not a hater.
ReplyDeleteBUT
I know it may be heretical to mention in the temple of double monk love, but am I the only one who thinks double monks are best paired with an eyepatch and pet parrot?
Aaaaargh, matey.
Where do you even get a pirate reference with the double monks?
ReplyDeleteI know so many of you great men love this style of shoe - but my God... they are ugly! I can't help it - they look awful. Maybe I should just shut up... but there are so many great alternatives.
ReplyDeleteyeah, shut up.
DeleteI just joined the Double Monk fraternity today, thanks to a an absolute steal on B/S, but you're right about the high threshold for entry. The Mora was a great shoe, but double monks are definitely a niche item, and AE is pretty mass-market minded.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Pediwear, and pLAL for C&J. They ship to the US, and I think they offer the best prices as well (Pediwear also has a nice price match policy).
ReplyDeleteSilk- well said, I concur.
ReplyDeleteClassic? Maybe.
Understated? Absolutely not.
If'n I'm going to drop a chunk of change on a pair of shoes I'd opt for something that does not inspire the donning of a tricorn hat.
Actually double monks are everywhere although I've not seen suede ones. It's a very nice shoe but for those first venturing into double monkdom it would probably be wise to buy a brown calf pair first since they are more versatile. Then if you like the feel and look, go suede. All that said and as the owner of a pair of black doubles I'd actually say the single monk is a better looking shoe and more comfortable to wear.
ReplyDeleteActually love my double monks. AE's, forget which model tho. Haven't seen them in a while tho... I really shoulda pulled the trigger ont he single strap monks. Haven't seen them on ebay in years.
