Attn: For One Easy Payment Of $100...
...you can get yourself J. Crew's Sutherland trench - that's half price for our non-mathematically inclined friends. Not a bad deal if you ask me. I always really dug the Sutherland trench (a traditional Mac style raincoat) for it's simplicity and decent construction, but at $200 it felt like a little bit of a rip-off especially with brands like Lands End Canvas and L.L. Bean Signature selling comparable items for half the price. Luckily for us (and all the ride or die J. Crewers out there) the release of a new and improved model (Belted! Cropped!) comes the slashing of an old maid. With Fall around the corner it makes sense to grab yourself a trench for those cloudy days when there is a 50% chance you're wearing your Bean boots to work. If you're a medium (i.e. a normal dude) or x-large (i.e. an NBA center) you may want to go ahead and click-on through.

Good looking out, L. Found my GI (Air Force navy blue) issued trench the other day as i looked through an old duffle bag. Its def taking a trip to the tailor for some slimming.

ReplyDeleteCouple of notes on the Sutherland: I bought one one eBay last year. I had tried one on in a store so I knew what size to get, but I had never worn one outside. Because the coat lacks structure (very similar to a warm-weather sport jacket), it is very susceptible to wind. Basically I fought with the thing the whole time I was walking around outside. I also felt the lack of lining or structure made it seem kind of cheap overall.
ReplyDeleteI considered having my wife sew some weights into the bottom hem, but I ended up deciding it was too much trouble and sold it to someone else. Later I found a similar style of coat from Brooks Bros. (with a full lining) on eBay, and it was made in the US. I ended up paying about $15 for it.
Also, as far as size goes, I wear a 44 suit jacket, which in J. Crew sizing translates to an extra large in this style--my shoulders just won't fit into their large. NBA-size guys are not going to find anything at J. Crew that fits them.
I bought one of these at the J.Crew store a few months ago for $70 and then flipped it on ebay for MASSIVE PROFITZ. It was really nice but I personally don't have the swagger to pull of a trenchcoat without looking like I'm dressing up as a detective.

ReplyDeleteI probably should have shopped around more, but I bought a Sutherland trench in British Khaki for full price (the color in small wasn't really available for less). It does tend to blow around in the wind, but I personally didn't find it all that noticeable...if the button on the back between the legs is fastened, it's not much of a problem.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have been called "Inspector Gadget" before, but I have received many compliments as well. Great coat, in my opinion. Love it for windy, rainy, or just cool fall/spring days.
