Wednesday Morning Inspiration: T. Rex
Arguably one of the most underrated bands of all-time, T. Rex is best known for their 1972 chart topping hit "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". The British band formed around singer songwriter Marc Bolan in the l960's as a folk group under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex, but quickly transitioned into a glam-rock band and changed their name to T. Rex. For a short period of time in the early 1970's the band rode "T. Rextasy" (their version of Beatlemania) to the top of the charts in both the US and the UK. Largely forgotten today, T. Rex is credited, along with David Bowie, with pioneering the glam-rock genre. These cats could seriously jam and it is a shame that their legacy is lost upon most American's today. Bolan's premature death from a car accident in 1977 sealed T. Rex's fate as an afterthought in the annals of rock history, but for a short period of time these guys were the kings of big riffs and even bigger amps. It's late on a Tuesday night and I can't think of a better time to get funky.

Not sure if they're all that underrated. I know more than a handful of people who love this band (including myself). Classic stuff.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget "Buick McKane" (sp?), that song rules.
