"When it comes to the showdown, they won't be there... "

On the heels of this post, I've been thinking a lot recently about "period" clothes that could be worn without looking like a complete jackass.  The argument of costumes vs. clothes is an intriguing one, which really depends on the individual and their own personal sensibilities/aesthetics.  As someone who tends to stick with "safer" sartorial options, lots of the clothes that make up this 19th century revival are wholly unrelate-able at least from my point of view.

While doing some research for a post on Woolrich I came across what may be the first exception to the aforementioned rule of mine.  Granted I'm still on the fence about a lot of this stuff, but I am digging this Railroad Vest available from Woolrich for $65.00.  I can see this working for both someone who needs a utilitarian vest for outdoors/work activities and the city dwelling guy who is looking for that new middle layer to kick things up a notch or two...or three if you go with the red/black plaid.  I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on the vest and the debate in general.

Here's a snippet about the vest's heritage from the Woolrich website, "This is one of the earliest garments made at the Woolrich mills in Pennsylvania. Yet every year, it becomes more popular. We originally made this vest for railroaders in the late 1800s."

  1. Picked it up at a thrift store last year in the color third down from the top. It's a great piece, it has great weight, and is a perfect layer for winter.

  2. Enthusiast- If you own it, it must not be to ridiculous considering your sentiments when we last brought up this whole revival thing.

  3. That looks like a nice vest, not too puffy (my main complaint with vests), but still visually interesting enough that it doesn't look like a sweater vest (nothing wrong with them and I own a few, but not for every look or every person). Price is right, too.

  4. It really blends into an outfit instead of sticking out. It should be noted that it has been updated since it's first release.

  5. I really like the the last two I've been looking for a wool vest w/subtle detailing and I think this might be it. Thanks

  6. Good read, I own the third one down, I think it's great, looks smart under the right coat and over a nice shirt.
I'd say this would probably have been a little too dandy for me a few years ago. But I'm all for pushing things forward now though. Time's change.
