When a source at Urban Outfitters told me they had a crazy collaboration in the works I never thought for a second it would involve one of the oldest and most revered clothiers in American menswear.
All that stuff we were debating was just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Stocking up on McNairy saddles is one thing, but a J. Press co-sign in the form of an
exclusive diffusion line is a whole new ballgame. And this isn't just some one off, this is a serious collection of good looking basics - like, really good looking. UO is calling the collection "a full line of new heritage menswear created exclusively for UO by Ivy League clothier J. Press." The good ol' h-word isn't going away any time soon. We're only at the pre-order stage just yet so there is no telling how well this stuff is made or how it compares to J. Press' mainline. The one thing we do know is that everything here appears to be updated in terms of fit. Pants have a 8" leg opening and the jackets are definitely of the shorter variety. I'm looking forward to seeing all this stuff in person and will probably pick up a few pieces thanks to the mall-esque pricing. I'm curious to see just how long this little partnership is going to last. They say opposites attract and this is one hell of an odd couple.

disregard my htttgap/ask comment then, ha!
ReplyDeleteCA$$$$$HING IN SON!
ReplyDeleteBuckle-back drill pants! This Ivy wannabe just wet himself.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. WOW! This shit sucks...
ReplyDeleteIs it just the model that makes me hate this stuff? I sure hope so bc there's an opportunity for this concept to be great.
ReplyDeleteFuck! UO. They should not be able to carry this stuff or anything that has to do with Ivy and prep. All the hipsters are going to be wearing this shit with their oversized glasses and black skinny jeans. This is death
ReplyDeleteIs that a blackwatch Baracuta-alike I see?! Be still my beating heart.
ReplyDeleteThat navy blazer looks a fine essential, too.
What's up with all of the animosity? Urban is making quality clothing by labels like J. Press, Rugger, and Filson readily available at good prices. While I don't love every piece that they offer from these brands, I respect what they are trying to do.
ReplyDeletewww.mensstyle101.blogspot.com
Oh my fuck there is gonna be a shit show from all the trads crying foul.
ReplyDeleteSweet pajamas
ReplyDeleteTo their credit, UO makes clothes that fit the truly small person. As a skinny guy I'd appreciate some true 34" chests, rather than needing to tailor all my clothing by two inches every time I buy something. Yes, tailoring is a part of the process, but getting an OTR shirt that doesn't look like I stole my older brother's would be nice every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteI wish they would have made a blackwatch blazer instead, I would definitely wear a J.Press blackwatch suit... but I still may buy the pants though.
ReplyDeleteI'm just going to think whatever Tinseth tells me to think. And no, that's not some ironic tounge-in-cheek meta-blogging smart assery. I just don't know what to make of this stuff and need an old pro to guide me.
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand, I hate UO and all they stand for.
On the other hand, copping some inexpensive Press gear would be sweet... and I've wanted some of those buckle back trousers every since I saw a pic - c'mon people, you know the one - of Miles Davis wearing a pair. (Wouldn't mind scoring a similar half-placket oxford, either.)
I'm sure FYM will have something to say about this as well.
Awesome. Pre-ordering right now!
ReplyDeleteGod help us all, better grab my Bedale 'cuz hell just froze over...
ReplyDeleteYou know what? This ticked me off initially but I'm gunna go ahead and pre-order that navy blazer/sportcoat. I need one and I don't care anymore.
ReplyDeleteJust got the Black Watch Pants. My first adventure into this tartan world.
ReplyDeleteCall me naive, but isn't the point of getting something from J.Press quality and not the label? Why would you buy an inferior spin-off just because they slapped a name brand on it? Its like those guys who walk around in those god-awful t-shirts plastered with "Armani Exchange" and the like, get something because its good quality and style, not because of the name associated with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to rag (too much) on UO, either, I've gotten a lot of good things from them (their sale section often has some great deals) but everything I've ever tried or gotten from one of their in-house brands has been mediocre quality at best.
Great, I clicked on the "diffusion" link above, which just lead to the UO Holiday pre-order page with no J. Press in sight. As I scrolled down the page in disgust, I kept thinking, "This is b.s...ooh, that Fair-Isle looks nice...total b.s....oh, those boots are nice too...what a bunch of crap...nice gloves."
ReplyDeleteDammit.
Well I saw all the stuff on the site yesterday and now it all appears to be gone.
ReplyDeleteCan't find it either, but the Boss Man says it's still there...
ReplyDeleteInteresting....is this a sign that finally the sleeping Giant is about to wake up??? Looking forward for any updates...
ReplyDeleteWow, all the J Press stuff is now gone off their site. Did it sell out that fast? Glad I ordered as soon as I read your post! (And got the $25 off) Thanks for the heads-up!
ReplyDeleteI think this whole Ivy/Trad thing just jumped the shark.
ReplyDeletejust got my blazer in the mail today. upon first inspection it looks great and i feel like i made the right choice in copping this in the pre-order phase.
ReplyDeletefunctional lape button hole and button cuffs.
only complaint the sleeves seem a tiny bit long.
I received my Flannel Blazer, Flannel Pants, and Khakis today. All are very god quality and excellent fit. Recommended!
ReplyDeleteJust scored the blazer for $39.99 from the store on State street in Chicago.
