Danish Dandy

While there is a certain blogger set that geeks out over all that Scandinavian minimalist stuff, that's normally not the kind of gear that graces the oh-so illustrious pages of Sart Inc so you can imagine my shock when I realized how much I actually enjoyed Day Birger et Mikkelsen's (I can't even pronounce that in my head) S/S 2010 collection.  What BM does extremely well is take the basic and clean hallmarks of Scandinavian style and amp it up with details and colors that are more akin to the preppy stuff we see here on our own shores.  The collection is full of well cut wearable basics set off with a myriad of cool features that would probably give Jil Sander nightmares.  BM is pushing these details as components of "designs with a story to tell", but I think that is a tad over the top.  How about, "they finally give Scandinavian clothes some much needed personality"?  To top it all off the lookbook does a bang up job of capturing these great details in all their tiny glory, which is a much needed change of pace with all the "look at how dope I dress when I go hunting and do super rugged shit" style brands and lookbooks these days.

  3. Your lack of Danish pronounciation skills are excused, I'm sure. I'm Danish and over here on the other side of the pond we never use their full brand name anyway.

But since you're a man of detail you might want to know that "Day" refers to ... well, day, ie. being a day collection (never heard of their night collection but, hey some ad guy probably thought it sounded cool). "Birger et Mikkelsen" refers to the designers. Why they chose "et" (French) instead of "and" beets me.

They usually have some pretty cool stuff in the collections but sometimes they just go all bohemian Gypsy on us and strike a totally, well... non-Scandinavian tone. This time around they've done a really cool job, though.

  5. I really like this collection, especially the waistcoats. There's a nice use of color, and detail like the necklines of the kelly green pullover. Nice find as usual.

  7. Anon @10:38 - Just buy any watch with a removable strap (you can find tons of cheap watches like this on Amazon) and then load up on watch straps from places like this:
