If you read this month's GQ you might have noticed Will Welch's profile on Mark McNairy. Well, it's up on the website and is a seriously great read. With phrases like "the most talked-about cobbler in, what, a century" this is a career changing piece of press for Mark. The article contains some great insight into Mark's roots, production and his buzzed about debut collection for Woolrich Woolen Mills. A big congrats goes out to one of my favorite designers and my friend, Mark McNairy. I think this serves as proof that if you challenge conventions and continue to do what you set out to do in the first place, people will notice.

Mark McNairy deserves credit for his success, but calling him a "master cobbler" will only cause people to point out that he is in fact no such thing. I'd rather we all praise him for what he has actually done rather than provoke or participate in backlash.
ReplyDeleteAnon @2:18 You should email Will Weltch in that case.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. I should have made it clearer. Thanks as always for the blog.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Anon - Mark works with Sanders to make some great shoes but he is by no means a cobbler. This is however coming from GQ and we all know how much they love using hyperbole.
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. McNairy--or should I say, Mr. McHairy?
ReplyDeleteSHAVE!
Love,
Your adoring public
A cobbler is someone who repairs shoes.
ReplyDeleteA person who actually makes shoes from the raw materials is a cordwainer.
McNairy is neither. He's a guy who goes to a shoe factory and says, "Um, can we make that in blue?"
"Cobbler". It sounds like GQ is damning McNairy with ignorant praise.

ReplyDeleteFriend of the bloggers, over hyped and now a cobbler! Lol!! We have a saying in England which is much more fitting to his body of work 'a load of old cobblers!'
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S Mark McNairy? With the dudes body of work work, I'd have thought he would be some kind of crazy fantastical elf.
ReplyDeleteand can't we call him a cobbler? I mean maybe he's not tapping the nails into the soles, but i mean he makes shoes. it would be saying Steve Jobs doesn't work in computers because the guy isn't coding anymore.
@pmg
ReplyDeleteSo Lee Iacocca is a mechanic? No, he is not.
Mark McNairy is a fashion designer. He designs shoes. He is not involved in the repair of shoes.
Pedantic thugs, you all need hugs.
